THE COURSE –

NYC as both subject
and classroom.

Fine Lines is built around New York itself. Its brownstones, bridges, and street corners are the subjects, and each one teaches something different about perspective, value, and texture.

Whether you're just starting or have some drawing experience, I'll walk you through the exact steps of how I draw buildings and architectural details.

Along the way, we'll build a focused, methodical process that helps you stay present in the drawing while keeping your lines loose, expressive, and personal.

Hello –

My name is Vi.

I've been drawing this city for 25 years.

As an art director, as an illustrator, and mostly as someone who needed a reason to slow down in a very fast place.

I work in pen and ink. It's permanent, which means no undoing, no filters, no second-guessing. Just me and the line I put down.

And I draw buildings, because they don't move, they don't complain, and there's nothing better than standing in front of something beautiful and drawing your way through it.

Over the years, the same questions kept coming up. What pens do you use? How do you get that kind of detail out of a single line? How do you even start?

FINE LINES is my answer. Not because I think you need to be good at drawing, but because I want you to learn to really look.

COME DO THAT WITH ME
THE MEDIUM –

Pen & Ink.
Nothing else.

We work in a single medium so you can focus on what really matters: observation, line, and the discipline of finishing one drawing before starting the next.

THE SKILLS –

You will learn how to:

I      See a building before you draw it

Break any structure down into a few big shapes, so you always know where to start.

II    Control your line and your ink

Clean, confident marks, plus the hatching and line weight that create depth with a single pen.

III   Make things look real

Use light, value and practical perspective to give a flat drawing form, so buildings feel like they're actually standing.

IV   Draw a finished piece start to finish

Take a subject from first pencil marks all the way to the last layer of detail, using the same process every time.

INSIDE THE COURSE –

Six chapters.
One line at a time.

We start with the fundamentals. The building blocks that make everything else possible. Hatching, line weight, simple shapes. Honestly, it's kind of satisfying from the start.

Then we take it outside. Into the city. Because that's where drawing actually happens. Not in a studio. But standing on a corner, looking up, finding the right angle. Learning to break what you see down into something you can actually put on paper.

I'm lucky to live in a city where everything is a drawing. I want to share some of those places with you. Big shapes first. Structure before detail.

The same method. Every time. Something to reach for when you don't know where to start. That's what I'm giving you. My process. The one I've used drawing this city for 25 years.

Foundations

Line, light, value, texture,
shapes, and perspective

The core of everything that follows. We build clean, consistent marks, learn to observe light, work through the value scale in ink, and break architecture into simple shapes. Perspective here is a gentle guide rather than a strict rulebook. You're drawing for clarity and charm, not engineering.

2.1     Intro to line. Drawing with direction and making clean marks.

2.2    Light. Overview and learning to observe it.

2.3    Value. The value scale in ink, ways to hatch, applying value to
          shapes, and creating shadows.

2.4    Creating texture, with examples.

2.5    Breaking architecture into simple shapes. How to simplify
          any facade or element

2.6    Perspective essentials. 1, 2, and 3 point basics, common mistakes,              and how perspective behaves on NYC streets.

2.7    Drawing inside and outside the box. Anything can be created
          from a box.

Everyday NY Subjects

How to warm up before we dive into the full drawing

Short, low-pressure sketches. In this lesson, we draw a few everyday New York staples: a coffee cup, a water tank, a subway station, the kind of things you pass without a second look.

They loosen your hand and train your eye before the bigger drawings. And this module keeps growing: I'll be adding new subjects over time, including ones my students choose.
