THE COURSE –
NYC as both subject
and classroom.
Fine Lines is built around New York itself. Its brownstones, its bridges, its street corners and the objects you pass without noticing. Each one teaches something different about perspective, value, texture, and line.
Whether you're just starting or have some drawing experience, I'll walk you through the exact steps of how I draw buildings and architectural details.
Along the way, we'll build a process that's focused and methodical, one that keeps you present in the drawing while your lines stay loose, expressive, and your own.
Build your skills in line and mark-making, and train your eyes to see light and form, so you can approach any subject with confidence.
Hello –
My name is Vi.
I've been drawing this city for twenty-five years.
As an art director, as an illustrator, and mostly as someone who needed a reason to slow down in a very fast place.
I've always had a passion for architecture and for drawing, and this practice is where the two finally came together. A short time training classically at the Grand Central Atelier shaped how I see form and light in every line I put down.
Pen and ink is my medium of choice because of its permanent nature. No undoing, no hiding mistakes, just a record of the moment you're spending being present. And for me, drawing architecture becomes a memory of a time and a place.
Over the years, the same questions kept coming up. What pens do you use? How do you get that kind of detail out of a single line? How do you even start?
Fine Lines is my answer. Not because I think you need to be good at drawing, but because I want you to learn to really look.
COME DO THAT WITH METHE MEDIUM –
Pen & Ink.
Nothing else.
We work in a single medium so you can focus on what really matters: observation, line, and the discipline of finishing one drawing before starting the next.
INSIDE THE COURSE –
Six chapters.
One line at a time.
We start with the fundamentals. The building blocks that make everything else possible. Hatching, line weight, simple shapes. Honestly, it's kind of satisfying from the start.
Then we take it outside. Into the city. Because that's where drawing actually happens. Not in a studio. But standing on a corner, looking up, finding the right angle. Learning to break what you see down into something you can actually put on paper.
I'm lucky to live in a city where everything is a drawing. I want to share some of those places with you.
The same method. Every time. Something to reach for when you don't know where to start. That's what I'm giving you. My process.

This one's a warm-up from the early part of the course. Short, low-pressure, the kind of thing we use to loosen up your hand and get you comfortable before anything harder. From here we build, step by step, all the way up to full drawings of the city.
